A permanent resident must accumulate a total of 2 years (730 days, not necessarily consecutive) in Canada over a period of 5 years in order to maintain his permanent resident visa. This also applies to dependents.

A permanent resident of Canada can apply for citizenship and a Canadian passport after at least 3 years of residence in Canada over a 4 year period prior to the citizenship application.
